Fall Festival of Flowers

I painted this on my patio recently.  When I started it, the plants were all in the shade.  I focused on the shapes and colors.  By the time I was an hour into it, the sun popped out and produced strong shadows and light.  That is the best part of plein air painting. Things change moment by moment creating spontaneous opportunities.

                                                         Bougainvillea

I created this during the Hidden Garden tour this past weekend. It sold right off the easel. I love it that happens.  The house I painted at was absolutely beautiful and highlighted with these huge pots of bougainvillea.  They were 40 years old and were glowing in the afternoon sun.  The owners move them inside the garage during the winter.  That's the only way to survive and get so large.

                                             First Earth Farm Sunflowers

I had the opportunity to join 8 other plein air painters at First Earth Farm in Bluff Dale yesterday.  There were paintings at every turn.  I was naturally drawn to this scene filled with color.  This is a working farm on the Paluxy river. We painted and then shopped for farm fresh and canned foods. It was a delightful day.

Day Lily Dance

I painted this as a demo at my show with Cheryl Lee Jones at Lake View Inn in Granbury. This show hangs until November 15th. Stop by and check out my oil paintings and Cheryl's great watercolors.  

This painting was inspired from the Master Gardens in Granbury. They will have their annual Free annual "Romancing the Butterfly" festival on Saturday, October 2nd from1:30-4:00. I will be there painting and enjoying the festivities.

                                                     It's in the Shadow

I spied this house on my morning walk. It was the array of colors in the shadow that attracted me to paint this scene.  I've studied this green house for years knowing there was a painting in there somewhere.  The soft pink crape myrtles and roses are a nice contract to the soft greens.

Water Lily Garden

A visit to Clark Gardens in Weatherford, Texas inspired this painting. I painted on location and still have not finished with all the painting ideas from that trip.  It was a hot summer morning and the perfect place to set up my easel. I created a couple while there and use those as color studies. This was painted in the studio using brushes, palette knifes and layers and layers of colorful paint.

I met up with 5 artist friends at the Chandor Gardens in Weatherford. It was a joyful morning painting with friends.  I let my blouse inspire the color of the water in my painting. There were reflections of the cloud indicating a soft blue. To keep algae down they paint the base of the pond black and dye the water.

Lost in Lillies

I spotted these day lillies at the master garden center in Granbury. It is always a feast for the eyes.  I love the bright red/orange of this flower.  The distance row of trees was a nice contrast.  There is also a large building in site that I choose to leave out! I love using my artist license.

There is meaning behind the color of a fire hydrant. 

Did you know the different colored fire hydrants indicate water-flow capacity? The blue indicate high flow. The pops of color against the blue fire hydrant were eye catching.  I spotted this yard near the town square in Granbury. The whole yard was filled with the bright colors of Spring. I knew I had to paint this colorful still life.

                                              Wildflower Season

As the weather warms up the flowers warm up.  The landscape is covered with beautiful color during the wildflower season. The reds are what are called Indian blankets . They are a gorgeous color of red that blankets the landscape. The yellow flowers are a variety shades and shapes. This painting is part observation, field study and my imagination. Using the palette knife. It’s filled with brilliant color and texture.

Red Hot Geraniums

My garden is a great source of inspiration. I love planting geraniums in this clay pot just for the color alone.  The great shadows are an added bonus.  Painting on a hard service with the palette knife is a great way to build up color and texture. Painted with a joy in my heart.

                                                     Poppies in the Sunrise

This painting was inspired from a garden on a very busy road. When I saw the bright red poppies, I turned around.  This garden also had roses, peonies and small yellow flowers. Add all that and the rising sun was a painting in the makings.   Using the palette knife and carving this scene out was a fun exercise.
