Poppy Hill Stairs, Original plein air impressionist watercolor painting by Rhoda Sterling

The rustic, stone staircase leads from English Walled Garden to Conifer Garden Hill alongside Poppy Hill. So many luscious gardens of different plants and styles, so close to one another. One reason I choose Chicago Botanic Garden to paint year round.

Smith Fountain #1, Original plein air watercolor painting by Rhoda Sterling

Rising one hundred fifty feet above the north lake, Smith Fountain jets ever-evolving patterns of water that punctuate the nearby Fruit and Vegetable Garden. Folks gather at the lakeside to watch breezes spread curtains of spray, as rainbows form in the early morning sun.
