Textured Hill Country Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

Willow City Loop ©2020 Niki Gulley
9" x 12" textured oil painting

I love bluebonnets but there were only two or three tiny ones at my feet, so I decided to use them as a guide and multiply them. That way I could paint the scene the way it would look in another two weeks. I started this piece on location along the Willow City Loop in Fredericksburg, TX and these interesting red rocks were calling my name! Combine their beautiful hues and shapes along with the dreamy morning light, and I thought this composition would make a perfect painting. Lastly, including the road on the left reminds you to slow down and enjoy the journey.

"Purple Shadows" by Palette Knife Artist Niki Gulley

Willow City Loop - 9" x 12" textured oil painting

I decided I wanted to paint the tranquil river again, so I returned to the Willow City Loop in Fredericksburg, TX one last day, . This time, I arrived earlier so I could capture the light before the shadows took over the scene and I wanted to have more fun with the texture. Working thick with palette knife and thick paint, I changed the composition and pulled the river over to the left side of the canvas creating more of a contemporary feel. Keeping my strokes loose, also add to the energy and abstraction of the scene. Full of joy, serenity and color,I hope you enjoy this cool peaceful place as much as I did.

Willow City Loop - 9" x 12" textured oil painting

When I started the scene, there were just a few shadows being cast from the trees on the right but they kept growing as I was painting! I liked the rhythm they were creating so I decided to include their patterns and go ahead and chase the light (which is a no no for plein air painters). But there's always exceptions to the rules, right? I was drawn to this tranquil spot, especially as the day was getting hotter, painted on location along the Willow City Loop in Fredericksburg, TX. I hope you enjoy this cool peaceful place as much as I did.

Textured Hill Country Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

Willow City Loop - 16" x 12" textured oil painting

The wild oak tree perched on top and the Prickly Pear cactus below it just said Texas to me and I had to paint the scene. This was on location along the Willow City Loop in Fredericksburg, TX.
I was drawn to the interesting rock formations and the tangle of foliage that was growing above it.  Working with palette knife to capture all of the texture in the rocks, I used a softer approach with the greenery to show the contrast between the elements. Finally the morning light cast a magical light on the scene that I wanted to capture before it was too late.

Willow City Loop Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

This was a scene from along the Willow City Loop in Fredericksburg, TX. These interesting red rocks were calling my name! Combine their interesting hues and shapes along with the dreamy morning light, and I thought this composition would make a perfect painting. A sliver of the road on the left reminds you to slow down and enjoy the journey, too. It was too early for bluebonnets, so I was searching for a beautiful scene that included some bright colors to break up all of the green in the landscape.

"Texas Trails" Bluebonnet Oil Painting by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

“Texas Trails" ©2020 Niki Gulley
16" x 20" textured oil painting

I painted "Texas Trails" this spring while visiting Austin and the surrounding area. This might have been one of the best years for the bluebonnets and wildflowers. The explosion of color along roadsides was incredible! This morning started out slightly overcast, and the sun kept peeking in and out of the clouds, creating a soft glow to everything it touched. I wanted to capture that magical light illuminating your journey on this Texas walking trail lined by bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush. I hope you, too, can feel the excitement of springtime with the wildflowers abloom in the Texas Hill Country!

"Lone Star Blooms" Bluebonnet Painting by Texas Artist Niki Gulley

“Lone Star Blooms" ©2020 Niki Gulley
30" x 40" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

In this painting, I wanted to capture the rhythm, color, and density of our bluebonnets and vibrant wildflowers flowing along the grassy rises and falls of our berms in the Texas Hill Country. Making sure not to over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting, while rendering the blooms slightly abstract plays with taking a traditional subject matter and showing it in a contemporary way.

New "Symphony in Springtime V" Abstract Wildflower Painting by Niki Gulley

“Symphony in Springtime V" ©2020 Niki Gulley
24" x 24" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

I wanted to show Texas' spring landscape in a completely different way. Making sure not to over blend my thick strokes so that you could see the marks and feel the energy found in nature. Repeating patterns and waves of color create a harmony within the painting, while rendering the bluebonnets and wildflowers along with their surroundings abstractly plays with taking a traditional subject matter and showing it in a contemporary way. With an aura of mystery, late day light touches the tops of the grasses and hills with glimmers of hope.

New "Symphony in Springtime IV" Abstract Wildflower Painting by Niki Gulley

“Symphony in Springtime IV" ©2020 Niki Gulley
36" x 36" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

I wanted to show Texas' spring landscape in a completely different way. With an aura of mystery and the promise of what tomorrow holds, late day light sparkles over the horizon casting its warm glow kissing everything it touches with glimmers of hope. The vague suggestion of bluebonnets and colorful wildflowers peek through the dancing golden tangle, leaving the landscape loose and free so that your imagination can tell its story. May you relish the joy in the beauty of nature, bathing in the moment and looking forward to what tomorrow will bring.

“Red Carpet Ride" ©2020 Niki Gulley
24" x 36" textured oil painting on wrap around canvas

In this Texas wildflower series, I wanted to capture the excitement and energy felt during a beautiful day in April when the Indian Paintbrush, bluebonnets and wildflowers are painting the horizon in gorgeous shades of reds and blues. Driving through the Hill Country late one day, the sun was just starting to drop, casting this golden hue across all of the wildflowers it hit causing them to glow and dance in the warm light. Deep, long shadows and the abundance of rich crimson Indian Paintbrush added to the drama and magic of the moment. Focusing on the patterns of color and contrast of lights and darks, I wanted to communicate the emotion felt being surrounded by all of this Texas beauty.
