Driving home from teaching painting classes all day

in 108 degree heat

all I could think of was "water"/"ocean"/"coolness"

hence these three blue-green watery monoprints.

Azo Afternoon, Contemporary Landscape Monoprints by Arizona Artist Amy Whitehouse

The sun has been glaring and burning the past few days

here in the Valley of the Sun.

Dogs and plants and humans are drooping.

But for painting? Inspiring.

The tiny bit of turquoise may be suggesting

a caught kite from windy days previous.

Though a traditional subject,

the treatment with pronounced texture

is quite contemporary.

And gold metallic paint brings palpable light to the scene.

Having re-read To Kill A Mockingbird recently, this piece made me think of the tree in front of Boo Radley's house where he hid treasures for the children - who were so afraid of this mysterious man. The image is stark and possibly fearful - maybe the unconscious image in Jem's and Scout's minds.

Some people have been asking me,

"What IS a monoprint?"

It is a one-time print made with acrylic paints,

there is only one original and no other prints.

I use high quality print-making paper

and I sign each one usually with unobtrusive initials

so as not to interrupt the art itself.

The art may be framed with or without a mat,

and I use standard sizes, 8" x 10" or 6" x 6",

so that mats/frames may be standard or custom.

Many of my monoprints are abstract,

all are contemporary in style.
