Juried into Wimberley Valley Art League "Coastal Port"

                                      COASTAL PORT   by Sally Fraser

A seascape painting of the Jetties in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. So many good memories of the beach, the coastline. Walking on the beach in the early morning when the sun appears over the ocean is my favorite time of the day. Looking for seashells, and listening to the ocean.

A palette knife painting with texture in acrylic.  A small painting 9 x6.

Beach, Contemporary Landscape Paintings by Amy Whitehouse 18" x 24", Oil, $800 As you know, I could paint the ocean and the beach everyday, and not get tired of the subject. Especially when it's 108 degrees outside as it is now, here in the desert. As I prepare for my new position as Art Teacher for grades K-2 and 6-8 YIKES I haven't had as much time to paint. But this is my latest, and I'm pretty happy with it. I can almost feel the powdery sand all over my feet, and almost hear the comforting sound of the surf. Hawaii Dreams, Beach and Ocean Paintings by Amy Whitehouse

11" x 14" Acrylic on W/C Paper, $125

100+ degree weather makes me yearn for tropical climes all the more.
Can't think of a more ideal place than Hawaii.

This painting started as a monoprint,
painting with brush and palette knife followed,
and it just looked like Hawaii when I finished it.
I want to jump into the surf right about now.

Florida Beach, Beach and Ocean Paintings by Arizona Artist Amy Whitehouse

16" x 20" Oil ~ $600

This painting was inspired by a photograph my English teacher, Karen Kelly Becker,
posted, from Ponte Vedra Beach.
I love it when the sand is lightly covered with water and the sky's reflection is something you can
step on, and enjoy the spongy sand underneath.

Thinking Coastal, Contemporary Abstract Seascape Paintings by Arizona Artist Amy Whitehouse

12" x 12" x 1.5" Acrylic, $195

The texture of this painting was achieved with
coarse pumice gel applied with a broad palette knife.
Acrylic paint was added to the pumice gel
as well as after the first layer had dried.
The 1.5" sides of the canvas are finished and painted in the same colors
so this is ready to hang.

Florida, Abstract Seascape Paintings by Arizona Artist Amy Whitehouse

6" x 8" Oil on Canvas Panel, $150

This abstract seascape has lots of texture which speaks of the
sensual, earthy feel of spending time at the ocean.
Though this is not a new piece, it is one of my favorites.
Having done an art fair today to introduce children
to collage on canvas,
I couldn't paint today.

What I have been doing for the past six weeks
while not posting, is monoprinting.
This has become a fascinating method of
creating art, and it takes a little less time
than painting.  I like to think that
one discipline only helps the other.

Below are a couple of recent monoprints:

Forest Dreams
8" x 10" Monoprint, $95

Dogwood Hope
8" x 10" Monoprint, $95

Cloudscape, Beach and Ocean Paintings by Arizona Artist Amy Whitehouse

12" x 16", Oil, $350

Painting 43 of CHALLENGE 56

Fighting some "writer's block" this past week
with my art, but finally finished one.
What I like about this beach painting
is the glittering light on the sand
which has filtered through the heavy clouds
and invites the viewer to take a walk.

Beach Day, Beach and Ocean Paintings by Arizona Artist Amy Whitehouse

20" x 24", Oil, $800

Painting 34 of CHALLENGE 56

Countless layers of paint make up this scene, as did
countless compositions.
Four days of painting, scraping, paper-towelling,
lightly adding layers, and ever so slightly tweaking,
and finally I think I found the stopping point.
I wanted to show the reflection of the sky on the wet sand,
as well as the grasses on the border of the beach.
And I wanted to achieve some abstraction
while developing a softer beach scene.
Lastly, I worked for color harmony.

8" x 10", Oil, $150

Painting 38 of CHALLENGE 56

Powdery sand in the dunes, and
sea oats sprouting into the air,
just makes me want to get sand in my feet.
The couple may be sharing a found shark's tooth;
this must be Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

Passage, Contemporary Landscape Paintings by Arizona Artist Amy Whitehouse

8" x 10", Oil, $150
Day 30 of CHALLENGE 30/30
30 Paintings in 30 Days

The challenge is completed, and was so beneficial to me.
I love "having" to paint every single day;
though of course there are those days where it's difficult,
I am exhilarated by the discipline.
Concentrating primarily on landscapes,
I hope I have learned something this past month.
Trying to keep the viewer's eye moving around within the canvas
was one goal; color harmony is always another.
Now I have to decide on a challenge for February.
I'm thinking of two paintings a day for 28 days.
Crazy?

Atlantic Beach, Beach and Ocean Paintings by Arizona Artist Amy Whitehouse

12" x 16," Oil, $250
Day 17 of CHALLENGE 30/30
30 Paintings in 30 Days

This challenge has inspired, stretched, and thrilled me.
It IS a challenge to get a new painting produced each day,
but the juices are flowing, and I really don't want to do much else.
And painting the beach and one of those funny gulls is pure joy.

Florida Sand Dunes, Abstract Seascape Paintings by Arizona Artist Amy Whitehouse

24" x 30," Mixed Media, $700
Day 16 of CHALLENGE 30/30
30 Paintings in 30 Days

Today I started a figurative painting that I'm really happy with,
but alas, not enough time today to finish it.
So this is my substitute for Day 16,
a mixed media piece I have been slowly completing over the last several months.
Having grown up in Florida, the beach still calls,
and I like the sense of sea oats that the foreground paper brings.
The sand dunes partially hide the water but lead to those waves.
I also like the ambiguity of the sand line/wave feeling.
