This little baby was painted a few months ago after a trip to

Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix.

It's time to go again and see the luminarias and the new exhibit

by Chihuly, and drink warm cider, and hear live music.

The intense Arizona sun obliterates the lit part of this little

barrel cactus.

The mean spikes were painted with the edge of a palette knife,

and the soft petals with a bristle brush.

I was going for the contrast of the papery, lovely flower

surrounded by the brutal thorns,

and the bright, bright sun

that makes it all such a scintillating scene.
