Barn, Impressionist Mountain Landscape, “Back Road” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

Submit This charming scene presented itself late one afternoon as I was taking the long way home on a winding, dirt back road in Ridgway, Colorado. The sun was rapidly setting, so I had to settle for a photograph.

Impressionist Landscape, Mountain Landscape, Trees, Fine Art Oil Painting “Changing Seasons” by Colorado Contemporary

My favorite little pond on Colorado's Grand Mesa is in constant transition. No longer Summer, not quite Winter, the stately pines are the only constant ... always green. This painting was chosen for the 2018 Colorado Governor's show.

Mountain Landscape, Trees, Fine Art Oil Painting "Places to Explore” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

FRESH OFF THE EASEL

There is so much to do here it is hard to decide where to start. You could wade in the shallow little pond and watch tiny fish scuttle around at your feet, or go right to the cool woods in hopes of spotting a snoozing elk or move across the open meadow to see what beautiful surprises await around the next corner. You could do them all in this land where time stands still.

A moody sky and burgundy leaves confirm that fall showers will give way to snow shortly. The wildlife in this high country meadow made plans a long time ago. Now they huddle in warm homes and wait for winter's blanket of white snow.

These solid looking rock out-croppings provide a perfect growing environment for tree seedlings. As they grow, their roots push deeper and deeper into the cracks, providing a solid anchor for the giant trees they will become someday. Rocks also soak up warmth from the winter sun, providing a warm spot on cold winter days.

Impressionist Landscape, Mountain Landscape, Trees, Fine Art Oil Painting “Locked in Time” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

As we wander through these ancient canyons, we can’t help to wonder what dramas played out right here on this spot eons ago. Was cave-lady Susie jealous because her man flirted with another woman? Was the bead work on her leather dress last year’s style? Did her child disobey and run over by the rattlesnake den? Did they simply have a different version of the same conflicts and irritations we create today?

Impressionist Landscape, Mountain Landscape, Trees, Fine Art Oil Painting “Golden Moments” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

The weather can change at a moment’s notice – one minute it is dark and stormy and next the sun is peeking through or glaring hot and clear. In one of the unpredictable sunny moments, I started painting on a white panel, trying to quickly capture the essence of the moment. A white panel gives me the option of using a rubber scraping tool to delicately remove wet paint to indicate white branches and other little accents.
