Early hours at the Botanic Garden find employees and a few volunteers preparing the grounds for summer throngs of adults and children to visit the 25 gardens and four nature areas that comprise this monument to nature on the Skokie Lagoon and in the Cook County Forest Preserve. As a painter this time of near solitude shortly after dawn is especially precious as the sunrise enhances the colors of the landscape. This painting captures the fresh atmosphere of a fresh new day.

I sat at my easel to paint an impressionist, plein air view of water lilies, and soon found I was in touch with an emerging life force originating in the ground, rising through water and reaching for the sky. Several people walked by and stopped to observe the progress and comment approvingly. This cloudy, still morning at the Botanic Garden brought forth in me an image I am continuing to uncover and understand. . .
