Red Rock, Impressionist Colorado Landscape Painting, “Avenue of the Big Cats” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

Although rarely seen by man, big cats thrive in the fertile valleys of this red rock country.
They travel favorite routes to water, hunting grounds and back to the safety of their lair.
If we look closely, subtle signs of their activities can be found.

Contemporary Impressionist Colorado Landscape Painting, Fine Art Oil Painting, Tree, “Queen of the Plateau” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

This large single tree growing out of inhospitable rocks looks like an aloof Queen surveying her domain. And like a protective queen, her strong branches offer a nesting place for birds and shade for anyone that comes along.

Contemporary Impressionist Colorado Landscape Painting, Fine Art Oil Painting “La Junta Ranch” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

All that is left of this once thriving homestead in La Junta are remnants of buildings nestled in the trees. One can only imagine family life in this peaceful but harsh meadow located far from the next neighbor. When everything goes right it is a fabulous place to live.

Contemporary Impressionist Colorado Landscape Painting, Fine Art Oil Painting “Marsh” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

The old, dead trees will fall down soon. As they begin to decompose, they provide nourishment and a safe place for seedlings to sprout and grow. That’s why, as you walk through a forest, you will see mature trees all lined up in a row. It all happens spontaneously when Nature is left alone to manage her own cycles.

Contemporary Impressionist Colorado Landscape Painting, Fine Art Oil Painting, Tree, “Canyon Colors” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

Growing right out of the rocks, these old juniper trees seemed to magnify the redness of Ute Canyon. The bark and pine needles they shed decompose over time, creating a little patch of nutrient rich soil around the base of the tree.

Trees, Contemporary Impressionist Colorado Landscape Painting, Fine Art Oil Painting “Invincible” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

At first glance, this pile of rocks appears inhospitable, but in reality the opposite is true. The nooks and crannys provide moisture and protection for tiny, delicate seeds to germinate and grow strong. This little delegation of trees represents the possibilities that can be found if we search for opportunities in the bleakest of moments.

Monument Canyon, Colorado National Monument, Contemporary Impressionist Colorado Landscape Painting, Fine Art Oil Painting,“Overlook” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

An unconventional interpretation of a monolith in Monument Canyon, Colorado National Monument. Pale colors, decisive, thick spatula strokes and the slightly foggy background diminish the harshness of this stark territory.

Contemporary Impressionist Colorado Landscape Painting, Fine Art Oil Painting “Nature's Legacy” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

Pretend the abandoned mining town is not there, and you get a glimpse of what this 11,000 foot mountain top has been like for centuries. A carefully selected palette and Jody’s signature bold knife strokes add to the serene and remote mood of this no frills, high country mining camp.
