A break from my urbanization to my old country ways.  :)

This is "stick season" out there, so I like to push things a bit. I needed a change from my urban series, so I headed down one of the roads out here in the Texas hill country.  I have to be careful because if I go out without my painter-vision working I don't see anything worth painting!  Everything seems to be a couple of shades of wheat, olive and gray.  Once I pick up on a subtle clue from the landscape color, I like to select a premixed color plan and see how I can enhance the effect using a very limited palette.  This one was done with Yellow Ochre, Quinacradone Magenta, Manganese Violet, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean Blue, Black and White.

What a great day I had at The Dutch Art Gallery on Saturday, May 18th!  I was scheduled to do a oil painting demo and had no idea what kind of traffic we were going to have.  Luck would have it, that a true value hardware store in the same shopping center as the Gallery was having a grand opening celebration.  The parking lot was jamb with cars and we managed to draw in some first time visitors to the Gallery.

This painting was placed in a silent auction and was sold to the highest bidder.  Also, I managed to sell five other paintings of mine.  Two of them were miniatures that I had brought in and they sold fairly quickly.  Those who came into the gallery, got to watch me paint and I received many compliments on my work.

Overall, it was quite an eventful, a rare treat to sell multiple works in one day!

Commission Piece

Here is my latest oil painting that I have been working on for several weeks now.  This is a piece that I was commissioned to do for a client through The Dutch Art Gallery in Dallas, Texas.  The client loved the colors in one of my existing pieces at the gallery and wanted me to paint a larger painting. We both met and talked and decided to paint a triptych on gallery wrap panels.  Before finalizing the design, I did a couple of sketches and few color studies (One in Spring Colors and the other in Fall).  The client liked the Spring Colors, so this is what we ended up painting!  Overall, the painting was fun and it was great experience getting to do a commission.  Enjoy!

New Bluebonnet and Indian Paintbrush Painting by Niki Gulley

was inspired by a recent trip to the Texas Hill Country. This spring conditions were perfect, and the bluebonnets were amazing! While we were near Fredericksburg, we took a scenic drive along the Willow City Look and as we approached the top of a hill about half way around, we were greeted by this gorgeous view of the rolling hills and bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush in full bloom. Then, to top it off the sun was setting in the distance casting its golden glow and backlighting the wildflowers. I had to capture the magical moment, enhancing the kaleidoscope of colors in the sky and along the ground. Arranging clouds, the road and rows of bluebonnets in rhythmic sweeping shapes, create a harmonious landscape that flows with light, texture and color, and suggest a feeling of optimism about what's to come.

We drove down to the Texas Hill Country to see the bluebonnets, and the Willow City Loop did not disappoint! Thick masses of azure blue as far as the eye could see. I was particularly drawn to this scene late in the day when the sun was starting to set and creating interesting long lavender shadows across the gently rolling landscape.

Texas Bluebonnets & Indian Paintbrush painting by Niki Gulley

When I was a teenager my grandparents moved to Texas and I loved coming down from Chicago to visit them. I remember the first time I saw a massive field of bluebonnets and I was awestruck by the expanse of color. It was amazing that such tiny flowers when planted in mass could form a solid sea of blue. I wanted to relive those fond family memories by recreating those exciting bluebonnet and Indian Paintbrush displays I remember seeing for the first time in "Rhapsody in Blue." Using this interesting weathered farm house in Marble Falls and painting it engulfed in one of our prolific bluebonnet and Indian Paintbrush displays perfectly captures those memories.

This painting reminds me of all the beautiful rolling hills and winding roads that seem to go on forever and ever through The Texas Hill County. There is so many neat places, towns to visit in this region of Texas. It is especially beautiful when the Bluebonnets and other wildflowers, like Indian Paintbrushes, Prickly Poppies, and Prickly Pear Cactus are blooming. I really enjoy painting landscapes depicting the countrysides covered in wildflowers. Trips that I have taken through The Texas Hill Country have served as a great inspiration and resource for many of my oil paintings, whether it is a spring day filled with aroma of wildflowers or a crisp, cool autumn day soaking in the breathtaking colors in the trees.

"Morning Break" by Kyle Wood

"Morning Break" is another one of my oil paintings inspired for all the trips that I have taken over the years through the Texas Hill Country. The Hill Country region of Texas is such a serene and relaxing area to visit. During many Spring Seasons, when Fall & Winter moisture has been abundant, the fields can become quite colorful with wildflowers. For this painting, I chose to do an early morning scene with sun peaking out behind the clouds. Complementary colors are being used quite frequently here with lots of purples next to yellows and oranges next to blues. For more variation, I mixed in some indian paintbrushes, which are typically reddish-orange in color with the vibrant bluebonnets. The water in the ruts of the road suggest that it has just rained. The clouds are beginning to break away so that the sun can shine down into the valley and the field of vibrant wildflowers. What a wonderful place to be on a spring morning.
