"Autumn Progression" Palette Knife Aspen Tree Painting by Niki Gulley

"Autumn Progression" ©2020 Niki Gulley
textured oil painting on canvas • 12" x 24" • Framed in espresso 2" floater frame

Flickering autumn leaves seem to almost dance in a gentle breeze while white sentinels slice through the colorful backdrop and create a rhythm as they march along. Repeating and receding, the aspen trunks lead you into the distance, inviting you to take a relaxing walk on a beautiful autumn morning.

New "Forest's Edge" Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Forest's Edge" ©2019 Niki Gulley
36" x 60" textured oil painting on canvas

I love being immersed in nature. After living in a city surrounded by concrete and noise, I find being surrounded by mother nature to be extremely cathartic, peaceful and rejuvenating. In Forest Edge, I wanted to capture those feelings of happiness and tranquility. Working first with thin drippy paint, and then building up thick layers of oil paint with palette knives to achieve extreme dimension, this painting is loaded with movement, energy and color. I hope it lifts your spirits and recharges your batteries while bringing texture, joy and the outdoors inside your home.

"Soaring Dreams II" by Contemporary Impressionist Niki Gulley

"Soaring Dreams II" ©2018 Niki Gulley
textured oil painting on canvas • 34" x 34"

In this painting I wanted you to feel that child-like wonder of staring up into the treetops and heavens above. Choosing uplifting golds and reds contrasted against a lavender-blue sky with gentle clouds drifting by, I've arranged the aspens in a circular pattern to give you a sense of laying on the ground, surrounded by the forest. Using diagonal leading lines with the tree trunks and limbs, your eye gazes into the focal point where all of the elements come together. Meanwhile, utilizing thick, curving paint strokes adds to that joyful, playful feeling of hope and discovery.

New "Rhythm Reflections" Palette Knife Painting by Niki Gulley

"Rhythm Reflections" ©2019 Niki Gulley
36" x 60" textured oil painting on canvas

I love being immersed in nature. After living in a city surrounded by concrete and noise, I find being surrounded by mother nature to be extremely cathartic, peaceful and rejuvenating. In Rhythm Reflections, I became fascinated with the mirror reflection on the aspen trees in the water below the horizon line. With the lake surface slightly blurring the individual leaves, patterns started emerging that created a sort of rhythm that I found mesmerizing. Working first with thin drippy paint, and then building up thick layers of oil paint with palette knives to achieve extreme dimension, this painting is loaded with movement, energy and color. Leaving the composition slightly abstracted gives you a chance to form your own contemplative narrative with nature.

Niki Gulley featured artist at First Friday Gallery Walk

“Ivory Refrain” ©2012 Niki Gulley
24” x 30” textured oil on canvas

Scrolling bark peels back like white washed parchment revealing secrets in the deeply textured wood below. A painting of grace and beauty, it’s verticality offset by embracing branches wound round as a sheltering arm. Each stroke is crisp, vivid, defined by thick textured oil, rich colors strike a reverberating chord – purple and the compliment of gold create a visual vibration that resonates in an optical song.

This painting along with several more of my textured aspen paintings will be featured at the Good Art Company Gallery in Fredericksburg, TX, as part of Fredericksburg's Fall Gallery Walk. I will be at the gallery to meet with you tonight from 6pm - 8pm and answer any questions about my work. "Aqua Dreams" textured oil painting by Niki Gulley

“Aqua Dreams” ©2011 Niki Gulley
36” x 60” textured oil on canvas

When we arrived at this tranquil spot, the early morning light was very cool in color, but as the sun began to rise from the horizon, it shone this beautiful warm light that shimmered on the water’s surface and cast its hope of what was to come from the brand new day. I remember the peacefulness I felt in that moment, and a sense that anything was possible. In Aqua Dreams, by showing the contrast in the cool aqua/blues in the foreground waters against the warm golden glow on the distant pond’s edge, I wanted to share that feeling of hope and promise communicated by nature.
