Contemporary Colorado Landscape Painting, Mountains, Fine Art Oil Painting “December Light” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

This Impressionistic Landscape captures an afternoon sun shining brightly for a few last minutes before the distant brewing storm closes in. That's the way of December days in the High Country.

Contemporary Landscape Painting, Mountains, Fine Art Oil Painting “No Agenda” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

Such a perfect day on the Grand Mesa. Grasses gently swaying in the warm summer breeze, birds singing and a family of ravens playing in the wind currents. They actually practice precision flying acrobatics. This day mom and dad were teaching an "out of sync" offspring.

Contemporary Colorado Landscape Painting, Mountains, Fine Art Oil Painting “Backyard” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

Returning home from a painting trip with an artist friend, he stopped the car, pointing off to the left. "There's a painting I'll be you've never done ... right at the top of your driveway". I couldn't resist the challenge. It was a great lesson to see the beauty in an ordinary scene.

Impressionist Landscape Painting, Mountains, “Dalton Springs” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

What more could a wandering cowboy in the Old West want … a safe place to bed down for a few days, cool shade next to a clean, cool spring ... all on a mountain top overlook.

Contemporary Colorado Landscape Painting, Mountains, Fine Art Oil Painting “Day After Day” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

Over a period of months, I passed this scene on my way to other locations and it always caught my eye. It is so simple, serene and “Day After Day” nothing ever changed except the light and mood. I often wonder if it looked the same to early settlers of this valley … except for the fence of course.

Western Landscape Painting, Mountains, Stormy Sky, "VALKYRIE" Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

My husband and I cross from Grand Junction, Colorado to Prescott, Arizona several times a year. It's so beautiful and wide open in the desert! We watched this amazing storm cell march across the wide desert with open mouths. It was full of dark and light clouds, rain, rainbows, whirlwinds, and lightening! What a storm cell bonanza! I've wanted to paint it for a few years, but doubted that I'd be able to do it with acrylic paint. I could glaze and scumble to my heart's content and still not say what I wanted to say. So I resurrected my oils and had at it. The wild and singular force of this beautiful cell reminded me of a Valkyrie; beautiful, powerful, and merciless.

Contemporary Colorado Landscape Painting, Mountains, Fine Art Oil Painting “The Dove Trees” by Colorado Contemporary Fine Artist Jody Ahrens

As I was painting this scene, there was a constant stream of Doves coming and going in the main stand of cottonwood trees. There were so many of them that I wondered how they kept from colliding. When they take off they give off a high pitched whistle so they were very noisy ... but no collisions.
