Western Landscape Painting, Mountains, Stormy Sky, "VALKYRIE" Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

My husband and I cross from Grand Junction, Colorado to Prescott, Arizona several times a year. It's so beautiful and wide open in the desert! We watched this amazing storm cell march across the wide desert with open mouths. It was full of dark and light clouds, rain, rainbows, whirlwinds, and lightening! What a storm cell bonanza! I've wanted to paint it for a few years, but doubted that I'd be able to do it with acrylic paint. I could glaze and scumble to my heart's content and still not say what I wanted to say. So I resurrected my oils and had at it. The wild and singular force of this beautiful cell reminded me of a Valkyrie; beautiful, powerful, and merciless.

Landscape Painting, American Southwest, "Above it All" by Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

The American Southwest has a variety of ecosystems. One of the most appealing to me is the pinyon/juniper forest ecosystem of the high desert. Camping above Monticello, Utah, we stood on a high ridge and watched the clouds play and dance in the wind above us. It was a sight and feeling I'd like to hold onto forever. That's part of the "why I paint the West" rationale. There are landscapes and plays-of-light I have seen on my travels that are tattooed on my soul. Painting them as I remember is an act of gratitude.

Landscape Oil Painting, Sunset Art “A New Dawn; A New Day” by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse

The summer of 2020 was a smoky one. The American West was ablaze for most of the season. We watched the Pine Gulch fire from our home: thick, billowing clouds rising high in the sky, flattening out, and spreading to cover the sky of the Grand Valley. We lived in hot, dry, smelly, and gray world for weeks. When the smoke began to clear the pyrotechnics were limited to spectacular sunsets; explosions of color as the sun set and changed angles behind the clouds. I photographed many spectacular sunsets during the summer of 2020. This one was one of my favorites and begged to be painted.

Western Landscape Painting ”The Church Off the Burr Trail" by Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

When one loves the American West, the reasons vary. For some, it’s where they were born and raised, and the love is deep and generational. For others, it’s a place they call home because they moved here to live close to vast and still-wild spaces. There are still secret, sacred spaces here, relatively untrammeled by throngs of people starved for natural beauty. This slot canyon off of the Burr Trail is one such spot. The perspective of this painting is of standing inside the tall, tall, red rock canyon looking out toward its entrance. To stand inside the canyon’s towering red, varnished walls is to stand inside a temple. It’s quiet there; protected, ancient, and accepting. Once I visited Norte Dame in Paris. It’s height, beauty, and grandeur were humbling. This place evokes the same feelings of awe and wonder. My painting was my need to speak to the feeling of walking out into the sunlight after visiting a deeply sacred space. It’s a birth, and perhaps a new beginning.

Original Western Landscape Fine Art Painting "UP TOWARD MARBLE" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

The road between Redstone, Colorado and Marble, Colorado is a breathtaking drive. You are surrounded by magnificent fourteeners , aspen covered hillsides, and golden meadows where horses, cattle, and elk graze peacefully. How could I not want to paint this?!

Western Landscape Fine Art Painting,“ODD LIGHT“ by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

Western landscapes are suffused with light; light from different angles, light filtered by particulates, light obscured by quickly moving clouds. When I looked at this landscape I was enamored by the juxtaposition of greenish sky and red rock and soil. Every color seemed to be bouncing off of something else. Oh joy!

Original Colorado Landscape Painting "The Palisade at Gateway" by Colorado Artist Nancee Jean Busse, Painter of the American West

A beautiful palisade overlooks picturesque Gateway, Colorado. My husband and I hiked up a canyon behind Gateway Canyons resort on a fine autumn day and I loved the brilliant yellow rabbit brush against the red rock edifice.
