The Sunny Side_ Minnesota River Arts Fair Plein Air

Saturday
was the culmination of the plein air event at the first annual
Minnesota River Arts Fair. This painting is one of two that I entered
into the culminating show and competition. It was a brutal
week with the weather being horrendously hot and there were some dedicated painters out there
every
day. I admit it, I'm a wimp when it comes to hot weather but I managed
to get in 2.25 days during the week. This was painted at the end of the
first day.
The
event was held at The Landing – Minnesota River Heritage Park, in
Shakopee, MN. This 88-acre living history museum
depicts life in the Lower Minnesota River Valley from the 1840s–1890s
with authentic 19th-century buildings, demonstrations and a scenic river
trail and overlook. It was my first time visiting the park - and I only
live 15 miles away! Funny how you never get out to 'site-see' in your
own area!

Plein Air Painting and Photography Workshop in Santa Fe, NM - Aug. 12-18
Last year on our Santa Fe workshop, one morning we headed to a quiet street in downtown Santa Fe. It was a beautiful day, and we were all drawn to the unique adobe architecture typical in Santa Fe, the soft morning light, and the vibrant color accents on each home. I chose this periwinkle doorway for my quick demo in pastels, both for the striking contrast against the orange pueblo and also because the russian sage everywhere was so beautiful, and added some balance on the left hand side of the composition. We all thoroughly enjoyed the morning, even if a passing homeowner or two were disappointed that we hadn't picked their doorways to paint!

This was painted in the Ft. Worth Botanical Gardens yesterday morning. I met up with "The Doug Club" and about 10 other artist.
I used water based oil paints and a really limited palette. I could not mix the right pink, so I introduced a magenta for the flowers. I am limiting my palette and switching to water based paints in anticipation of a trip to Italy. The combination of both made this painting a real challenge. I did paint it with a palette knife and that was familiar. This is available for purchase. $200.00

Just delivered. One of my new collectors asked me to create a painting for his wife based on one of her photos of a forest preserve in the Chicago area. I was excited to paint this custom piece for them since I've always loved tree scenes. I liked how the distinct curving lines along the path and rickety fence lead you deep into the woods. Playing with autumn golds and oranges contrasted against intense blues and purples in the shadows, I created energetic strokes with my palette knife to create web of texture in the distant tangled branches and dense falling leaves in the foreground. The final painting is full of movement, color and depth and was exactly what my new collectors were looking for!
