Queen For The Day..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This is the completed demo I began last week for the Brenham Arts League here in Texas.

I possibly spent only 30 minutes on the actual demo as I had already done a longer one and time was short.

This image is on white velour paper.

The steps of this are below..

 I like to work a lot of negative painting into my background first, and the flower/s evolve as the painting progresses.

I did not pre draw to begin with, merely used 'VEILS' of pastel marks over the surface first to disturb the surface tension. 

After this I referred to my photo of a flower and sketched a little over these marks to give me a 'road map' of a flower so to speak.

I like movement in my works, and not sticking to a plan, just allowing the painting to tell me what it wants to do.

SIGNS OF SPRING, 8X6", OIL, SOLD

The iris has always been a favorite flower of mine, but the ones that will grow in Florida are not to spectacular.  The ones we have here are not the big, beautiful, bearded iris that the more northern states have.  Ours are little puny flowers.   I always look forward to visiting our mountain home in North Carolina, as one of the first things I did when we bought it, was plant all those lovely flowers from my childhood.  Daffodils, iris, tulips, lilac, cone flowers, and lots and lots of hydrangea.  I have not been able to go up so far this spring, but we are planning a trip soon.  I hope there are still some daffodils and lilac blooming.  But if they are gone, I know the iris will soon be there to greet me.  What is your favorite flower?

WILDFLOWERS, ACRYLIC, 20X24, SOLD

This is definitely not my usual painting! A few years ago, I took a month long workshop with Fritz VanEeden. Fritz is a very well known and respected artist from Holland who has been living in our town at least part of the year. I was fortunate enough to work with him for over a month, 3 days a week, for 4-5 hours. Fritz is obsessed, and if he is awake, he must have a paintbrush in his hand! He is also a wonderful man. I do enjoy this type of painting, but I just couldn't get the hang of painting out of my head. So this is my one and only true abstract!

Now, my varnishing question got several replies, both here and on facebook, and the winner is......retouch varnish! I have run to my art supply store to grab a can and now feel much more confident in my technique. So, thank you all very much for your replies!

It's always nice to wake up to something cheerful, especially on a Monday, so I hope this little daily painting fills the bill for you.

Not my usual painting of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this one is from those grown up mountains in the northwest.  You know those real mountains, those rugged mountains, those manly mountains!

It seems to me that everything is more rugged in the west whether we are talking mountains, oceans, bears, seagulls, trees etc.  Everything seems tougher and bigger and maybe a little scarier!

We are a little more beaten down, or should I say, gentler on the east coast.  One thing that does not change, is the beauty of our country, no matter where you are!

This scene was on the road between the town of Crested Butte and the ski area. My friend Pat and I spent quite a bit of time trying to capture every square inch of this scene on our cameras!

This still life abstract painting was created using layer upon layer of acrylic on a textured 1" panel board. It was created intuitively from memories of the many pastel floral still life paintings I created in pastels years ago. This is one of the abstracts shown last month in my solo show here at Brushstrokes Studio-Gallery in Denver, CO. I used complimentary colors of blues and oranges to create a real atmosphere with the darker background enhancing the poppy like flowers flowing out of the dark vase. Van Gogh would have liked these flowers. They are pretty ornate, with little white dots all over them, so the big decision is: how much detail? I may go back and put a bit of blue in the sky, even though there wasn't any, just so the painting doesn't seem quite so divided into three parts.

This is an original encaustic abstract painting. It is bright and beautiful with spring flowers popping out of a green meadow!    

Encaustic is the medium which consists of molten beeswax, resin, and pigments that are fused after application into a continuous layer and fixed to a support (wood) with heat. This achieves a lustrous enamel appearance. The word 'encaustic' comes from the Greek and means to burn in, which refers to the process of fusing the paint. Encaustic paintings can be polished to a high gloss, molded, sculpted, textured and combined with collage materials. Encaustic is also the most durable of artist's paint and an excellent investment. This is due to the fact that beeswax is impervious to moisture. Because of this it will not deteriorate, it will not yellow, and it will not darken. Encaustic paintings do not have to be varnished or protected by glass. If your painting looks dull, or gets dirty it can be wiped clean with a soft cloth dampened with water and buffed to a high shine.
