Journal Entry, Texas 2..Watercolor..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Just finished this journal entry.. a few years ago I was at the banks of the Pedernales River not far from where I live here in Texas. It’s a great spot to paint.

Lately we have had an enormous amount of rain and flooding, so this area is a good place to stay away from till the water subsides.

I used an old photo for this journal entry.
It’s in my Stillman and birn 8” x 10” Beta series journal.

Thanks for visiting..

Texas Bluebonnets, 8x10 Oil on Canvas by Carmen Beecher

NFS

Van Gogh would have liked these flowers. They are pretty ornate, with little white dots all over them, so the big decision is: how much detail? I may go back and put a bit of blue in the sky, even though there wasn't any, just so the painting doesn't seem quite so divided into three parts.

Jimmy Longacre_subjective realist landscape paintings_DESERT TWILIGHT

This was done from my sketch, by notes and a photo. A very difficult time of day to catch the sense of light. The sun is down and its light is refracted from the atmosphere onto the landscape below.

This is one of the times of day, like sunrise and sunset, that changes so quickly that only the most experienced and observant painter can hope to get a fairly faithful portrayal of light in a plein air painting.  No doubt that swiftly passing moment offers one of the most wonderfully gorgeous lightings on the landscape.  For me to attempt to capture it I blocked in my sketch composition and took it as far as I could in order to be ready once the sun went below the horizon.  Then, I tried to mix the color relationships and slap them in place as best I could.  Certainly not a painting that will make it to the gallery, but a worthwhile study. On another evening, I sat with my notebook and made observational notes about the effect I saw.  I also shot some photos that weren't particularly helpful except for recording where things were.  The camera's eye is not nearly as sensitive as the human eye, and you get very warped color results.  It all made for a fun time doing this version in the studio.

Jimmy Longacre_subjective impressionist landscape paintings_TEMPLES AND THRONES

This view in Zion Natl. Park can be seen from the spacious, covered porch of the Historical Center.  It's part of a sweeping amphitheater, with a vast wealth of painting subjects, any time of day.  The Shadow patterns slowly shift and transform the view as the sun moves across the sky.  There's way more information than you can possibly handle, so it's a great exercise in selection, editing and arrangement.

Jimmy Longacre_subjective impressionist landscape paintings_NOONDAY SHADOWS

Because of the steep canyon walls there are interesting shadow/light patterns all day long.  Sorry, to be so brief with my posts.  I've been spending lots of time with my family over the holidays, and trying to put up some of the work I did while in Zion Natl. Park in November and early December.  I'll get back to being a bit more thorough after the new year.

Jimmy Longacre_subjective impressionist landscape paintings_FRESH EYES

Going back through the studies I painted at Zion National Park reminds me how much fun I was having there.  Putting myself in a new environment is a sure way to awaken the senses and inspire me to paint.  Everything looks new and fresh.  Motives to paint seem to be everywhere I look.  It also gives me fresh eyes for my home landscapes.  More travel planned for this year!

Jimmy Longacre_subjective impressionist landscape paintings_ZION CLIFFS

I've been traveling to paint during October and November.  It was a wonderful experience to get out into new landscapes.  Now, I'm playing catch-up back in the studio.  It's great to be home again, but I need to improve my juggling act this year.  I have a new iPad, so I can start posting while traveling.

Here's a plein air study done in magnificent Zion National Park.  I'll try to show you more of what I've been doing.  I feel things changing, getting more direct in my paint handling.  I think that's coming from paying closer attention to starting with a good notan pattern. Careful planning is the greatest enhancement to spontaneity!

Jimmy Longacre_Texas impressionist landscape paintings_RAINY DAY COLOR

Painted during a steady light drizzle, in the Port Aransas Plein Air competition.  I't's interesting how the light coming through an overcast reverses the usual order of things from warm influence in the light with cool shadows, to warm shadows and cool influence in the light.  I've noticed that if I pay attention to this phenomenon, it will sometimes produce rather beautiful color relationships. When I don't the result often has an inert, depressing feeling.  If I can choose, I prefer the sunshine, but I enjoy the surprises that can come from observing the light on a cloudy day.

Jimmy Longacre_Texas impressionist landscape paintings_HAZY DAYS

Another one of my plein air paintings from last week's Coastal Paintout in Port Aransas. This was a hazy day, and I was interested in the effect of the backlit scene. Because the sun was behind the house it created a very nice foil for hi-lighting the profusion of sunflowers at the fenceline. The flowing curve of the mowed lawn also presented a useful shape emphasizing the focal area.

Jimmy Longacre_Texas impressionist landscape paintings_"PEOPLES' CHOICE AWARD"_Port Aransas Invitational Coastal Paintout

I just returned from the annual "Port Aransas Coastal Paintout". I'm happy to say that my painting "FAREWELL TO GIBBS" won the "Peoples' Choice Award". Kind of an emotional piece for me, as 'Gibbs Cottages' is one of the last remaining relics of the old Port Aransas I knew growing up. It's destined to be razed to make room for the new. Can't look at them without remembering all the fun and crazy summers I had there in Port A, with my friends.

Painted at the Kerrville Outdoor Painters Event, October 2013.  This property was loaded with wonderful old classic barns, sheds and cabins from the past.  The light falling on this grouping was irresistible.

Jimmy Longacre_Texas impressionist landscape paintings_WHEN THE SUN DOESN'T SHINE

Outdoor painters love a sunny day displaying interesting shadow patterns that contain rich, subtle colors contrasted with the bright sunlit spectrum. But, alas, you can't always have it that way. Gray day paintings present a unique challenge, because they lack the availability of shadow shapes that are so nice to use in organizing eye-catching compositions. Because of the close values and and color relationships, gray day paintings present a unique challenge.  Even though they can be more difficult to paint, they can yield some beautiful effects.  This painting was done last Saturday at the Kerrville Outdoor Painters Event, on a still, thinly overcast morning that gave the landscape a kind of beautiful glow.

Jimmy Longacre_Texas impressionist landscape paintings_PLEIN AIR COMPETITIONS_Growth and Frustrations

HOME MEMORIES   11x14  oil on canvas panel
I just returned from The Kerrville Outdoor Painters Event, a four day plein air painting competition.  This was one of my entries in the show.  I didn't receive the Best In Show award this time, but I'm pleased that my painting was selected as one of the winners in the show.  However, for those of you who participate in these events, or if you're thinking of participating in one, I'd like to offer my opinion about the experience.

Winning, or placing in the competition is nice and gratifying, of course, but I don't think it's the primary objective, or benefit.  There is so much to gain from accepting the challenge to do your best in the company of other painters of varying skill levels, and under whatever conditions happen to prevail during the event.  Why?  Because, it can't help but test your skills, raise your confidence level as a painter, and move you more quickly toward your next plateau.  By the way, that's what painting is about, and it never changes.

While you can't influence the preferences and prejudices of the show judge, wholehearted participation will, without a doubt, make you a better painter, and you will have a wonderful time interacting with other artists, and the public.  Bottom line: It will stretch your skill level, pay-off in the amount of satisfaction you derive from doing something you love to do, and you will have a lot of fun.  I hope you get to win an award now and then, but don't get fooled into focusing on that.  GO FOR IT!

Day 27, I'm home from painting in CA, OR, ID and UT BECKY JOY

© 2013 Becky Joy    Pond Reflections    oil   6 inches x 6 inches

I arrived home late last night, LATE, after driving all day, about 14 hours. Needless to say, I didn't got much done in the way of painting. Although, I did paint a little. I cleaned up all my things, washing, putting things back in the studio and pulling out paintings. I've got a few paintings that I felt need some more work. This was one of them. I actually painted this in Texas when I was at the OPA show. I felt the reflections were a little weak. I deepened some of the colors in them and added a couple more brushstrokes on the shoreline the it was texture against the smooth water. I have a couple more that I worked on today and photographed a few paintings also.

Tonight I will be at the Royal Palms Resort doing a demo as I have done on some previous Friday nights. It's late notice now, but if you are in the area stop by. I will be there next Friday also. I'll be back in the studio tomorrow packing some sold paintings and prints, cleaning up and getting ready for some serious studio painting. The sales on my e-book, How to Create Beautiful Paintings Using Foundational Concepts have been going very well. There have been a couple of glitches. 1. I inverted two terms, but corrected that and got the new version out the few that bought at first. 2. I set up the sale with paypal, an email with the download link was supposed to go out after your purchase. It has been inconsistent with some people getting the link and others not. I've had to keep an eye on the paypal and send out the link as quickly as I can. So, that is disappointing. I have now talked to the person that works on my website about finding a cart for me to do what I want. Hopefully, this will be resolved soon. In the meantime, if you purchase the ebook and don't get the download link, email me at beckyjoy@beckyjoy.com

Talk to you all later.
Have a good weekend.

Day 23 Rural Austin Texas Dusk, plein air to studio mood painting BECKY JOY

© 2013 Becky Joy    Rural Austin Texas Dusk      oil on panel     6 inches x 6 inshes

This may be Texas, but I'm still in Oregon. I was itching to paint some mood paintings. This is one of them. I used a small 6x6 plein air that I painted in Austin, TX in May while at the OPA Show. Even though I invent the color of my mood paintings, the plein air paintings are very useful to me. The plein air will show me the relationship of colors to each other, which is something that I am still concerned about in paintings that I invent colors. I did change the lighting direction of this painting. I don't always do that, but I felt to balance the painting it was best to have the light come from the right rather than the left. This also left more sky open to put the lightest warmest color in this space. This painting is a little later in the day than the one that I painted yesterday, thus making the sky a cooler color. The ground colors reflect that sky color becoming cooler also.

The original plein air from Austin, TX

I'm excited and humbled to have my painting Strength and Serenity accepted the the American Impressionist Society National Exhibition and Show. It was a good day painting Strength and Serenity in Yosemite at the beginning of my trip.
