Beach, Contemporary Landscape Paintings by Amy Whitehouse 18" x 24", Oil, $800 As you know, I could paint the ocean and the beach everyday, and not get tired of the subject. Especially when it's 108 degrees outside as it is now, here in the desert. As I prepare for my new position as Art Teacher for grades K-2 and 6-8 YIKES I haven't had as much time to paint. But this is my latest, and I'm pretty happy with it. I can almost feel the powdery sand all over my feet, and almost hear the comforting sound of the surf. Blue Hearts Cottage is the newest daily painting in Flower Mound Studio, a little scene from Coronado Island, California. I took the liberty of adding two tiny carved hearts under the window, the Valentine's Day holiday lasts quite a while here, it seems. Just inside the entryway on the little carved table in the foyer you'll find a box of Godiva chocolates. I saved one of the truffles especially for you...if you hurry it might still be there!

Garapata California plein air oil landscape paintings
Garapata Strength 5" x 7" oil on canvas panel $100.
I tried to take some photos of work in progress, but like usual I missed a few steps. For this painting I used a cotton canvas for the support, not my favorite. I used some of Gamblin's solvent free get to help move the paint when I first layed in the paint. It helped to spread over the rougher canvas weave.
The second painting was a small barn with a patch of wild mustard.

I had planned to start yesterday, but was ill-prepared. I forgot to throw in a new tube of white paint.
Needless to say, it made it difficult to paint. I had a scraper yesterday and gave up. I waited until the Gamblin booth opened and picked up a big tube of white along with some other colors. In these paintings I used their new grays and whites: cool & warm white, warm portland gray, cool portland gray, and buff titanium. I really had a fun time mixing and painting with all those grays. It was a good day working with grays. It'll help me to prepare for Art in the Open in Ireland.
I'll start posting some more tomorrow. All of these paintings will be 5x7, $100. each.

This painting was done on location at Lafayette Reservoir in Lafayette, California in 2012. I loved the different elevations of hills in this landscape. As I was painting the landscape transformed from foggy and grey to sunny and vibrant. I tried to translate that into this painting by using both color palettes, vibrant light in the foreground and blue hues for the background. I find that plein air painting best captures the transformation of landscapes and true colors of nature. Something that a photograph will not capture.

California Dreamin' ~ Beach and Ocean Paintings by Arizona Artist Amy Whitehouse

I could have named this Florida Dreamin' or any other beach area...
As much as I love Arizona - and I do! it's an amazing, beautiful state -
I just think I need to live at the beach at some point.
So California, here I come - for a quick fix "for my daughter"
(somebody has to do it).
This painting has 1.5" painted sides so is ready to hang.
I saved my favorite for last. If no one wants to buy it,

Day 13, Project 125 Painting Oregon farms

I finally made it to my destination in Oregon late last night. It was a light, typical rain almost all through my drive in Oregon. I slept in this morning, but did get out for a short time later in the day. In this scene I was attracted to the clouds that enveloped the top of the mountain and of course, the green field.
Everything is pretty green right now, and a nice, pleasant temperature. It will be heating up by the end of the week, sounds like record temps to me. I visited with family today and will be seeing friends and more family while I'm here. I'm a fourth generation born in Oregon City (my son was a fifth). You can imagine that I have a lot of relatives here. It's funny every time I come up here, I'm struck by how green it is, certainly compared to the desert. Summers are perfect in the Northwest.
Tomorrow I'm hoping to start getting out and doing a little more plein air, hopefully early in the morning. You'll see what I see tomorrow.
