Of Corpus Contrasts..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I just finished this one in my cozy studio while the sleet falls outside and the temperatures drop..

Brr... it's cold today. A great day to be painting!

This one is on an Ampersand Pastelboard.

I usually stay away from this kind of support as I prefer one with more 'tooth' to it for my pastels. However, this one worked pretty well for me, so I am glad I persevered.

 Image size is 18" x 24" unframed

Springbrook Dynamic..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This landscape is dear to my heart.
It an image in pastels on Sennelier sanded paper (unframed)
$400 plus S/H

A few years ago my dear old  92 year Australian aunt Hazel  (Johnson) passed. She was the other professional artist in my family and somebody I admired greatly.

She loved the Springbrook Mountain area of Queensland in Australia, and always wanted her ashes scattered there.
So off a few family members went with her ashes in hand and we bid her farewell in this gorgeous national park.

I took the photo (below) and embellished the colors in Photoshop, as I don't love greens per se..

Even though the Aussie greens are way more earthy than our greens here in America, I still felt a need to vamp the photo before tackling it in pastels.

I often do this with my photos, just using HUE SATURATION and slide the options till you get a great color change. You might try it.

Majesty Sublime..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

MAJESTY SUBLIME was started yesterday as a demo for the Brenham Arts League.

What a lovely audience I had, and it was a pleasure having such an eager participation for my demonstration. Thank you all so much.

I worked more on this today just to complete the image, although I had a good start at the demo, it was just not a 'home run' quite yet.

I think it's okay now, I will live with it a day or so and see how I feel.

This image is on Sennelier sanded paper (a dark green I believe)

It is unframed and measures 19.5" x 25.5"

                                                                $525 plus S/H

Prints are also available through my Fine Art America site..

Chasm Interrupted..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I am on a roll with these abstracts now, hope you are not sick of them.
This one was a challenge..

As you will see from the step by step page below, it began as a full sheet of Sennelier paper on which I had done a quick demo for an art group years ago.

I am going through all my old filed paintings and reconstructing them. I hate to waste this wonderful substrate.

So...  I first turned the old demo upside down before deciding to cut the paper in half vertically.

I find if I view an old image upside down first it changes my perspective on that piece, and I begin to see possibilities for another painting.

This one, as with my previous posts, changed a great deal throughout the process of painting it. I could easily have gone with a horizontal format, but in the end, decided on this vertical.
I am constantly rotating the work as I paint.

Mantled Epoch..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Mantled Epoch is cut from the same paper as the previous post. I am glad I stuck with this set of abstracts, always a little worrying to rely on one's design sense, but I do love that 'angst' in my art.

I began (after I had cut the full sheet in half as with my previous painting) by turning the remaining 'demo' image upside down.

As I worked by blocking in some hefty darks, I rotated every few minutes, and kept doing that till I settled on a pleasing composition.

Just by rotating the piece as I progressed, I saw so many opportunities evolve. Each rotation looked so different, and the focus became a different area of the painting.

I had a hard time, as with my previous post, to finally decide which rotation pleased me the most.
Eventually it was this one.

See the process of my thinking below, remember I had no reference with any of these abstracts, I just 'went with the flow' so to speak (pun intended).

This piece is 13" x 19" unframed
It is a pastel on red Sennelier paper.

$350 plus S/H

Cavernous Tumble..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This painting started as a demo start, only partly done, and I did not want to toss the great paper.

It was a full sheet of reddish  Sennelier paper, which I turned upside down and cut in half so I have two pieces I can work on. (there will be another painting coming up soon from this paper)

I liked the color contrast in the demo, so just went with it.

I wanted to abstract my image (though) and after my France workshop last May and a visit to some amazing caves, I felt this image could be an 'echo' of that .

See all the steps below, to better explain.

This image is 13" x 19.5" unframed

$350 plus S/H

Prints of this image are also available through Fine Art America:

Below is a little on the thoughts behind my process.

As a finished painting the sheet directly below shows the image in all directions. I could still change my mind on this, it's an easy thing to erase my signature and place it elsewhere if I decided to perhaps go with a vertical format, I will have to live with my chosen top image for a few days and see how I feel.

The sheet below is my whole thought process throughout this painting. From an old demo partly done on a full sheet/cut in half/turned upside down/ and then gradually working around the shapes in a new painting.

Soft Light on the Pedernales..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

This one is similar to the landscapes I have posted before. Had a great time doctoring colors in Photoshop. But.. now that program seems to have died on me!! Oh woe!

I desperately need my Photoshop.

Looks like I have to call my computer guru.. Grrr!😒😒

Anyway, this image is a pastel on a bright blue Colorfix paper.

It measures 15.5" x 18.5" unframed.

$300 plus S/H

Valley Rapids..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

VALLEY RAPIDS is completely made up. It began as a demo I did for Jerrys Artarama a couple of years ago. This was the original 30 minute demo below.

Not wanting to waste this wonderful sheet of Sennelier paper, I decided to work on it again yesterday and today. Here is the result.

This image is 19.5" x 25" unframed

$525 plus S/H

Just Turning..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

JUST TURNING is a scene from the area of Hamilton Pool here in Texas, the river is the Pedernales.

I love this area, so full of things to paint. I used Photoshop to embellish and vamp up my colors with this one, something I do a fair bit..

This image is done on a mauve colored Canson TOUCH paper, not one of my favorites I have to admit, just not enough 'tooth' to it for my style of painting.

Image size is 22" x 28" unframed
$525 plus S/H

Twists and Turns Near Johnson City..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I just finished this pastel..

The surface is the all cotton sanded Pastel Premier paper.. I am liking this surface a lot especially for my landscapes.

The scene is mostly for memory, and is very near Johnson City on the way to Fredericksburg here in Texas.

I pass it a lot in the car, never stopping to take a photo, but it always gets my attention on the highway. That zig zag line again, can't resist!

The colors are very embellished to suit my mood, and I am sure with the end of summer, the river is nowhere near as full as this is, but I am an artist, what can I say?

This image is 12" x 16" unframed

Peace..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Just a small pastel on Sennelier sanded paper.
I was warming up for a larger piece yesterday, and  decided to get the pastel dust flying on this little guy first.

Lily Pond Light Dance..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Yep, I know, try saying that title fast three times.. Ha! I just thought it fit this image though, so what the heck.

The pond was in Le Vieux Couvent in France,  and was magical. Filled with frogs all singing and trying to find LOVE.

I did embellish this with some of the foliage, the monstera was not there, but  I had a nice photo from which to bounce and decided to place it in for an accent element.

This image is a pastel on a mystery sanded paper I had.
It is 10.75" x 14.75"

$325 plus S/H unframed

Last Light Over the Hills Frayssinet, France..pastel.. Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Another landscape of the area around Frayssinet in southwest France . This area is dotted with sheep farms, and wonderful pastures.

I just happened to be walking at twilight and saw this heavenly sky, just had to try and do it justice.

I also love this panoramic format, challenging but perfect for this genre.

The substrate is a sanded paper, not sure which one, but it's not Sennelier. Maybe Wallis?

Diving into my stock drawer is a bit of a lucky dip with selecting my papers for pastels. :))

Grasses..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

I am on a roll now with DUSTING. It works so well on very textured surface, but beware, you can overdo this technique.
Here is the above image with additional DUSTING.
 I LOVE this technique!

I had this odd off cut of paper, and have no idea what it was though. It's a dark maroon color and is sanded. Any ideas?

Anyway, I had mounted it onto some archival foam core a few years ago so why not use it?

The format is quite elongated and poses problems or should I say, challenges to the artist, composition wise.

I chose to do just tall brambles and grasses, really playing with the various textures.
I used an alcohol wash under painting in parts, let it dry and then worked the pastels over the top.

I don't usually do this technique of underneath washes, but this paper took the wet media so why not?

I hope you like it.

This image is 8" x 22" unframed.

Perfect Walk..Pastels..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Just finished this one. Sooo cozy in my studio with all the rain we are having, perfect to paint!

The scene is one I took a photo of while on my morning walk in Austin. I love this greenbelt area, so much to see. Of course I tend to romanticize my colors.

In actual fact they were all pretty green on the actual day, so this is with the 'Rae' touch. :))

This is a pastel on Sennelier sanded paper and is unframed

Lake Sam Rayburn Colors.Pastel...Texas Artist... Rae Andrews

I have just returned from a fabulous few days at my buddy's lake house on Lake Sam Rayburn in southeast Texas.

Thanks Vicki, for having us all!

Wow! The morning and afternoon walks with my puppies were delightful, and the scenery was superb, so expect more beachscapes from me in the future.

This one is a long elongated format, a favorite of mine on which to paint.

It is done in pastels on Sennelier paper.
8" x 19.6" unframed.

Fall Dazzle..Pastel..Texas Artist..Rae Andrews

Just finished this one. I worked on Sennelier sanded paper, a rust/tan color.
I knew I wanted the contrast of the blues against that complement.

This one is mostly made up although I did start with a photo I had of a waterfall.  In Sketch Club, I played  on the Ipad , overlapping some more water and rocks.

Painting waterscapes always relaxes me, I love to do them!
I hope you like this one.

Rim Light...Landscape..Pastels...Texas Artist...Rae Andrews

Call me a romantic, but don't you just love to watch the clouds form especially with an approaching storm?

Well I do.. :))

I had no reference with this one, I just 'felt' the clouds and the movement.

Pastels are such a great medium to portray seascapes and skyscapes. One can 'sculpt' the shapes so seductively, it's as though the artist can become one with the image.

See I told you I was a romantic..

This image is 12.75" x 20" unframed and is for sale.

$295 Plus S/H
